| RemarksRemarks: | "Traces of overstriking were noted in the description of the CNG piece but the host coin could not be identified. On our coin, however, it is possible to distinguish a small dolphin at 4 o'clock on the obverse. This remnant of the undertype strongly suggests that the host coin is a Syracusan litra struck under Dionysios I, which sometimes featured dolphins around the obverse head of Athena (CNS 44; Nomos 27, lot 1049) and was struck to the same standard and employed cast flans similar to that of the present piece." | ||
